    Ban Shorting?

Unfortunately, this will create FAR more problems than ever!

Shorting ONLY works if the underlying financial security is overvalued!

if you doubt this, try short-selling gold bullion right now!

Hint: don’t bet the house (sorry, negative-equity mortgage).

    .

Shorting is the modern method of Free Market Forces testing the true value of a security.

If the shorter gets burned, he can deduce that the stock is good value.

(It’s an open secret that many historic, successful investors SHORT a stock to test the effect BEFORE they buy into it!)

However, if you effectively “Freeze the clock” on investors who might be in the middle of a shorting program, you are robbing them of the ability to trade on accepted terms.

if you MUST ban shorting, then it should be done with MONTHS of prior notice.

THEN, you can say “caveat emptor“.

I’m afraid that the current fast ban is akin to a betting exchange feeling entitled to “stop the clock” whenever it chooses, to control the “markets” which its Customers ( NOT the exchange itself!!!) have established.

It is INTERFERRENCE WITH FREE MARKET FORCES and can only damage the free market itself.

It is now no longer “free“.

Fo the cynics, BTW, I hold NO current short positions.

    Adonis.

    Yes, THAT Adonis!

You are wise. I was hinting at a rally but this bloody thing doesn’t refresh, does it ?

What you’re saying makes sense, although I have always questioned the method if shorting. Why not just buy and sell, get in or out, as there are many different ways to invest. This was bound to happen, and it works better than freezing all assets, which could be what we’re looking at if we let panic decide our fate.
