1. Personal Computer Tips
- Buy a computer that has a big monitor (19″, 21″, or more).
- Set the screen resolution of your PC at the maximum (e.g., 1920 x 1080).
- (You might augment the size of the font(s) used by your browser and your other software packages.)
That way, you will have more things on your screen.
-
-
2. The Best Web Browsers
- We recommend open-source software (e.g., Mozilla FireFox, Opera, Google Chrome, etc.).
- Please, dump MicroSoft Internet Explorer where it belongs: in the trash can.
- We recommend “Verdana” as your browser font, and we recommend that your browser applies it to all webpages (including to the webpages that have already their own styles).

-
3. Information Technology Links
- We are compiling the best IT links for you —see our linkroll under “Information Technology”.
- Other list of IT links: Information Technology @ CFM.
- Among others, we recommend: Google; Yahoo!; Mozilla FireFox; Mozilla ThunderBird; Programmer’s NotePad; Kompozer; IrFanView; VLC; WordPress; R; etc.

The Best Feed Readers
![]()
Web-based feed readers: Google Reader, iGoogle (with the Google Reader module), BlogLines, NetVibes, PageFlakes, etc.
PC-based feed readers: browsers (MicroSoft Internet Explorer 7+, or Mozilla FireFox), browser extensions (Brief, Sage with Mozilla CSS, or Wizz), cross-platform and open-source software (RSS Owl, or Blog Bridge), etc. Do parameter your feed reader so that it fetches each site feed once an hour, no more.
-

Site Feed Advice

- I recommend that you read any blog within a Web-based feed reader and I recommend Google Reader;
- You should be able to scan-read quickly the items within your feed reader —classify them, tag them, share them, and search them;
- Read your feed items starting with the oldest items;
- Create a main folder for your most important feeds, and set it as your “start page”. Put your less important feeds in other folders;
- Tag the important items that you want to highlight and/or share;
- Share items with like-minded people who have good taste;
- Perform searches in your archived items —in all of them, by category, by tag, or by feed.

Sharing Feed Items With Friends

- To share feed items with me (Chris Masse) within Google Reader, go to GMail, click on “Add Contact”. Paste my e-mail address there (chrisfmasse +++at— gmail +dot— com). Once I receive your invite, I’ll accept it.
- Alternatively, send me your GMail e-mail address, and I will activate the relationship.
- You will then see my shared items and I’ll see yours within Google Reader.
- Don’t worry, you can hide me later on, if you don’t like what I share. Just put your mouse cursor on my name on the list, “HIDE” appears, and click on it, and you won’t hear from me anymore.
- I share only the very good stuff on politics (facts + opinions, but coming from multiple horizons, not only from one camp), information technology, business, marketing, finance, prediction markets, etc.
