The HubDub prediction markets on assassinations could be somewhat useful in some cases -now that I am sober and that I think of it.

I published 3 times my opinion that it is a nuclear scandal of apocalyptic proportions that HubDub allows prediction markets on celebs&#8217- death and assassination. My view is that this will attract strong criticism from people who are very strict on the issue of morality. And the prediction markets don&#8217-t need another polemique at this time.

But after reading Medemi&#8217-s comment, popped up an idea in my mind. Medemi tells about the assassination of Pim Fortuyn, an extremist politician in Holland &#8212-who received many death threats and did not get appropriate protection. His assassination was predictable. (He was indeed gunned down during a political campaign.) If, at the time, a prediction market had been opened on the likelihood of his violent death, the high probabilities would have attracted attention &#8212-and, as a result, maybe the Police would have granted Pim Fortuyn a special protection.

What do you think?

Talk about morality, I think most people don’t have a clue of what really happened here. I am one of few who knows that Fortuyn never wanted to get involved in politics as it seems he was quite aware of the dangers. But the people closest to him, his supporters, people who were aware of his special qualities demanded he should go into politics, and serve the public. Which he did, eventually. The sad events which followed should never be repeated, anywhere in the world.

I could probably find 2 dozens of articles like this one, even in English.

It seems as if many foreign journalists had been consulting their Dutch colleagues and written down the negative and often distorted information they received. The nature of this information was also reinforced by various politicians of the established parties when interviewed on television and in newspapers. These politicians also participated in so called debates which actually were chaotic gatherings, mainly because of the biased journalists who presided the meetings in a rather unprofessional manner.

Since not all of Fortuyn’s criticism was justified, most journalists and many a politician of the established political parties started to attack Fortuyn and depicted the man as a monster

The electorate however saw very clearly what was going on. The more the established parties and the established journalists picked on Fortuyn, the more the popularity of Fortuyn was rising and it showed very clearly in the polls. Fortuyn was winning and the established parties were loosing. Thus a nasty atmosphere was created which could have been a stimulus for anyone who was planning to kill Pim Fortuyn. If debates and interviews had been presided in a rightful manner, the killing of Pim Fortuyn would have been less probable.

Fortuyn was not a racist, but a threat to the established Dutch political system and maybe a threat to the Dutch constitutional monarchy, as some high situated people believed.
