Suggestion for WordPress – Subscribers Capabilities

No Gravatar

The WordPress registered subscribers should have access, internally, to the &#8220-comments&#8221- page &#8212-so that they could read comments, and reply to comments from there. (With a little help from the &#8220-Absolute Comments&#8221- plugin.) That would be useful to the heavy commenters. Indeed, that &#8220-comments&#8221- page loads quicker than anything else.

If you want to check the brand-new Midas Oracle comments every 10 minutes, dont use a Web-based feed reader like Google Reader, do use (for this purpose) a PC-based feed reader (like Sage on FireFox).

No Gravatar

Google Reader fetches our comment feed once an hour or so. Too long for some.

Scan this feed explainer, I have listed the PC-based feed readers. You can then decide exactly when to fetch our comment feed &#8212-every 10 minutes, every 20 minutes, etc.

As for me, the blog administrator, I read comments and reply to them &#8212-from within the WordPress system, on the &#8220-comments&#8221- page.

I&#8217-ll log in as a simple subscriber, soon, and see whether one simple registered Midas Oracle reader could, from there, reply to other people&#8217-s comments. That would solve some of the problems of the guy linked to, above.

The simplicity and social utility of the gravatars explained to Tom W. Bell by blog guru Chris Pirillo.

Tom W. Bell,

Please, watch this short video, and get yourself a gravatar. It&#8217-s easy and fun.

The little difference between Midas Oracle and Chris Pirillo&#8217-s blog is that he set up things so that when somebody does not have a gravatar, a randomly-pixelized image appears, while on Midas Oracle, there&#8217-s a face pic of an anonymous person that appears.

Problem with WordPress

No Gravatar

Sometimes, when one would save a draft, one would be forcefully taken to the &#8220-post preview&#8221- page (even though the &#8220-Preview this Post&#8221- button was never pushed) &#8212-leading the newbies to think that their post has been published against their will (like what they would do in a totalitarian state). Confusion and mayhem follow. Please, WordPress people, do correct this bug. Thanks.

Great WordPress Plugin Of The Day

No Gravatar

Cross-Linker by Jan Hvizdak

  1. Write the words InTrade or BetFair in your post, and the plugin will automatically add the appropriate web links.
  2. Of course, the plugin won&#8217-t mess with your already, manually embedded links.
  3. Generally speaking, it won&#8217-t mess with anything &#8212-it is highly customizable.
  4. The links appear in your feed &#8212-few of the other plugins in this category can do that.
  5. Deactivating the plugin won&#8217-t delete your stored links.
  6. You can backup your stored links.
  7. You can even import the links from your blogroll. (I haven&#8217-t tested that, yet, but will do soon.)

I have tested all the WordPress.org plugins in this category, and Cross-Linker (from Jan Hvizdak) is the best ever.

Recommended for prediction market journalism (or else).

I&#8217-m Chris Masse and I approved this message. :-D

My first prediction market plugin for WordPress

No GravatarI have created a lite plugin for WordPress. It displays the best one-line mottos and one-line quotes on prediction markets, in the top right corner of the admin panel. This plugin is based on a slight modification of the &#8220-Never Gonna Give You Up&#8221- plugin (based on the &#8220-Hello, Dolly&#8221- plugin).

Here&#8217-s a screen shot:

Prediction Markets Rock.

As of today, I have just put the BetFair slogan in the database. Overtime, I will add quotes from our prediction market luminaries (or so they think they are). I might e-mail them to ask them to provide quotes &#8212-or I might scout the Web for tidbits.

After my harvesting and implementing, I&#8217-ll put up this plugin in the WordPress directory of plugins, so everybody can download it for free and get illuminated by our prediction market wisdom. :-D

Midas Oracle is now powered by WordPress 2.5 -and you should be too.

No Gravatar

  1. Just updated to WordPress 2.5. (See a screencast here.)
  2. I waited one week before upgrading, so as to take the time to monitor the WP 2.5 compatibility with our plugins.
  3. To upgrade, I used the &#8220-Wordpress Automatic Upgrade&#8221- plugin. The automatic process failed, but the step-by-step process worked fine. Overall, I&#8217-m happy. This plugin is a time saver.
  4. WordPress 2.5.1 is due for May 2008. In the meantime, if you spot some gremlins, let me know.
  5. Speaking of gremlins, WP 2.5 has now a better compatibility with Safari, so maybe Tom W. Bell will come down here to tell us what he thinks of the new US anti-gambling regulations.
  6. The Midas Oracle post/page authors will spot a totally reconfigured &#8220-Write Post / Page&#8221- area.
  7. They have added a bunch of &#8220-media buttons&#8221- (to insert pictures, sounds, videos, etc.) and an &#8220-embedded media&#8221- button (which you&#8217-ll find if you click first on the &#8220-Kitchen Sink&#8221-). I have yet to fully experiment all that.
  8. There is now a &#8220-full screen mode&#8221- for the writing area.
  9. They have hidden the 2 blockquotes button under the &#8220-Kitchen Sink&#8221- sub-menu.

UPDATE: Gartner is out today saying that open-source software will take over the free world, eventually &#8212-and that includes Chapman University and Tom W. Bell&#8230- :-D

Why the BetFair blog shoud move from MovableType to WordPress – Edition #3,961

No Gravatar

Matt Mullenweg has a post out comparing the 2 platforms and touting WordPress.

[&#8230-] WordPress is 100% open source, GPL. All plugins in the official directory are GPL or compatible, 100% open source. [&#8230-] WordPress MU is 100% open source, GPL, and if you wanted you could take it and build your own hosted platform like WordPress.com, like edublogs.org has with over 100,000 blogs. [&#8230-]

I have read with fascination all the comments there, on the original MT blog post, and else. I have spotted many webmasters explaining why and how they moved from MovableType to WordPress &#8212-but I have spotted none explaining why and how they moved from WordPress to MovableType.
