I’m not so impressed by the ad. Maybe I under-appreciate the importance of personality and the art of looking busy in political leadership, but why does the GOP seem to think that a phone call between the president of the U.S. and the CEO of BP is significant? Is the thinking that BP is screwing up so badly they need the chief elected official in Washington, D.C. to tell them how to run their business? This is a GOP position??
Obama is the guy chiefly responsible for ensuring the law is enforced and ensuring public policies are pursued by the federal government within the limits of the U.S. Constitution. Obama gets to appoint judges and certain other federal officials, veto bills he doesn’t like, sign treaties and pardon criminals. Obama is commander in chief of the military. Which of these duties makes it important for Obama to call BP’s CEO?
Obama should, and no doubt has, spoken to numerous federal government officials – folks at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Interior, and so on – in his role a chief executive of the federal government, ensuring that agency interactions are coordinated and laws are enforced. What more does the GOP, which sometimes pretends to favor limited government, think is appropriate?
