Who is behind?

IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING THE INCIDENT.

Somebody did set up a website making a fool of me. Searching who is behind this turned out the IP address of the NewsFutures server &#8212-but Emile Servan-Schreiber is as innocent as a lamb because this data was in fact fudged by the attacker (so as to wrongly put the blame on NewsFutures). It might well be the same thing for the IP that connected to comment here.

UPDATE:

Did the attacker try to pin it on, not just one, but *two* prediction market software vendors?

So it was coming from [NAME EDITED BY BLOG PUBLISHER]?

Some explaining to be done there then …?

cowardly bastards …if this can be confirmed I will pass the story on to one of my contacts at the Guardian. And I will ensure that the other cowards who received emails last Friday about the websites, but chose to keep quiet are also exposed; by informing their companies of this obscene example of corporate bullying.

    Niall,

I can’t say more because I am not expert in these things.

Frankly, I think this entire thing is hilarious fun.

Well, maybe not fun to be called a “fraud”, but I imagine that Chris has developed a pretty thick skin and is mostly imperious to such insults.

Overall, it is sort of flattering to Chris that someone would go to all of this trouble.

In fact it is so flattering to CFM, that I almost suspect that CFM himself is behind this little episode. The reader should ask himself, “Do I think Chris Masse would employ mildly devious methods to generate controversy and interest in his site?” My answer is “maybe.”

“Is Masse technically skilled with internet services so as to cover his tracks, if he did in fact do this.” My answer is “certainly.”

“Is Masse clever enough to execute such a scheme.” My answer is that Masse is clever, but I’m not sure he is clever enough.

Overall, I lean toward the idea that someone else is responsible, but I haven’t completely shaken the thought that the Midas Oracle bombaster-in-chief himself is responsible.

Well, good for you. Niall is upset, though.

“Chris has developed a pretty thick skin”

    True.

(The real issue is not people denigrating me, the real issue is the lying and the double speak from the author of this.)

“it is sort of flattering to Chris that someone would go to all of this trouble.”

    True.

However, it looks bad that a consultant would spend that great amount of hours doing this stuff. That shows he has no clients.

“Chris Masse would employ mildly devious methods to generate controversy”

Controversies are good if they generate inbound linking to Midas Oracle. I don’t think it was the case here.

““Is Masse technically skilled with internet services so as to cover his tracks, if he did in fact do this.” My answer is “certainly.””

No, I am not skilled into covering my footprints.

Mike, the problem is that NewsFutures looks bad, at first glance, so I will spend some time telling my readers that Emile has nothing with that.

(I don’t think Emile thinks it is so much fun, frankly. Ask him and you will see.)

Again, Mike, that is NOT what was said about me. (The comments by The Colonel featured pretty much the same arguments.)

What is in cause here is the lying and the double speak from a someone.

And, Mike, you know only 50% of the whole thing.

    Mike,

The accused company (NF) spent a good deal of time trying to deal with this issue. They went into the technicalities of all this (which is quite arcane for a non-IT person like moi), and I can assure you that they are not smiling at all about this.

NF sent me all the technical info to explain to me how the thing was done. Indeed, it was possible for somebody registering a website to cover his footprints and to make like another company was web-hosting the site.

How to set Reverse IP Lookup to anything that you like (or dislike, should I say, in this case)… including a NewsFutures server that does not exist in reality…!!!…
