A case of advertisement mistaken for content

Here’s the screen shot of the latest feed item from Felix Salmon’s finance blog (Market Movers) —as I got it in my Google Reader (a Web-based feed reader). Scan it, and then reach below for the remark that I want to share with you.

When I first read it (too quickly, surely), I thought that the visual representation was part of the post content. (I thought that Felix Salmon was trashing Charles Schwab, see.) It’s not —it’s an ad.

By contrast, here’s my approach. You see clearly, in the lowest part of this screen shot, that I clearly separate the post content from the feed footer. Spot the “Feed Item Footer” marker (in bold) that draws the line. (I don’t publish feed ads, as of today, but if I were to, they would fit after that “Feed Item Footer” label.)

Thanks for the feedback. I want ads in RSS feeds to become increasingly important, which means we can’t have people thinking I’m trashing Charles Schwab when in fact they’re making my feed profitable!
